Government Motors

Is the federal government now running General Motors?  President Obama says no, but note how one of the President’s biggest fans interprets today’s events:

Just as President Roosevelt did after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the President must tell the nation that we are at war and we must immediately convert our auto factories to factories that build mass transit vehicles and alternative energy devices. Within months in Flint in 1942, GM halted all car production and immediately used the assembly lines to build planes, tanks and machine guns. The conversion took no time at all. Everyone pitched in. The fascists were defeated. We are now in a different kind of war — a war that we have conducted against the ecosystem and has been conducted by our very own corporate leaders. This current war has two fronts. One is headquartered in Detroit. The products built in the factories of GM, Ford and Chrysler are some of the greatest weapons of mass destruction responsible for global warming and the melting of our polar icecaps. The things we call “cars” may have been fun to drive, but they are like a million daggers into the heart of Mother Nature. To continue to build them would only lead to the ruin of our species and much of the planet.

The other front in this war is being waged by the oil companies against you and me. They are committed to fleecing us whenever they can, and they have been reckless stewards of the finite amount of oil that is located under the surface of the earth. They know they are sucking it bone dry. And like the lumber tycoons of the early 20th century who didn’t give a damn about future generations as they tore down every forest they could get their hands on, these oil barons are not telling the public what they know to be true — that there are only a few more decades of useable oil on this planet. And as the end days of oil approach us, get ready for some very desperate people willing to kill and be killed just to get their hands on a gallon can of gasoline.

President Obama, now that he has taken control of GM, needs to convert the factories to new and needed uses immediately.

The quote is from Michael Moore, who openly acknowledges that President Obama has “taken control” of GM.  This is the leftist vision for America: a government that justifies its control of the economy because wartime measures are necessary to push a left-wing environmental policy.

The loss of freedom occurs when someone in power begins to take it from the people incrementally.  This only works if the one in power can convince the people that what he is doing is for their good.  And so the one in power will always begin this process with alarmist rhetoric about an imminent threat that cannot be stopped unless the people hand over to him more power over their lives.  For the left, that threat has become global warming.  It is the trump card they can play to try to justify even the looniest suggestions, like the one you read above from Mr. Moore.

Some might say that President Bush did something similar to this with the threat of terror, using it to expand government power over our lives.  He probably did, at least in some ways.  But there is one key difference here: September 11, 2001.  The horrors of that day continue to stand as a testimony to the fact that we truly are at war with fanatics who want to kill us.  It is amazing to me how quickly we have reverted to a pre-9/11 mentality.  With a new administration in office, an economic crisis, and an ambitious domestic agenda, terrorism has completely fallen off our radar screen.  If anything justifies wartime measures, then certainly an act of war like 9/11 would do so!

The attempt to turn the environment into a wartime issue is ludicrous.  I realize that most thinking people, on both the left and the right, will agree with me on that.  But when more sane and intelligent leftists make their global warming proposals absent the martial language, aren’t they really just differing from Michael Moore in degree, rather than kind?  Few people will agree with Moore’s radical proposal, but aren’t all of the other global warming proposals somewhere on the same spectrum that robs us of freedom in the name of a trumped up threat promulgated by a narrow interest group?
